Interrogative Investigations: The Form, Meaning and Use of English Interrogatives by Jonathan Ginzburg,
Interrogative constructions are the linguistic forms by which questions are expressed. Their analysis is of great interest to linguists, as well as to computer scientists, human-computer interface designers, interrogative pronoun and philosophers. Interrogative constructions have played a central role in the development of modern syntactic theory. Nonetheless, to date most syntactic work has taken place quite separately from formal semantic interrogative pronoun and pragmatic work on interrogatives. Although there has by now been a significant amount of work on interrogatives across a variety of languages, there exist few syntactic interrogative pronoun and semantic treatments that provide a comprehensive account of a wide range of interrogative constructions interrogative pronoun and uses in a single language. This book doses the gap in research on this subject. By developing the frameworks of Head Driven Phrase Structure Grammar interrogative pronoun and Situation Semantics, the authors provide an account that rigorously integrates syntactic, semantic, interrogative pronoun and contextual dimensions of interrogatives. The challenge of providing exhaustive coverage of the interrogative constructions of English, including various constructions that occur solely in dialogue interaction, leads to new insights about a variety of contentious theoretical issues. These include matters of semantic ontology, the quantificational status of wh-phrases, the semantic effect of wh-fronting, the status of constructions in grammatical theory, the integration of illocutionary information in the grammar, interrogative pronoun and the nature of ellipsis resolution in dialogue. The account is stated with sufficient rigor to enable fairly direct computational implementation.

Principle B, VP Ellipsis, and Interpretation in Child Grammar by Rosalind Thornton,

Principle B, VP Ellipsis, and Interpretation in Child Grammar by Rosalind Thornton,
Among the universal principles are those known as the principles of the binding theory. These principles constrain the range of interpretations that can be assigned to sentences containing reflexives interrogative pronoun and reciprocals, pronouns, interrogative pronoun and referring expressions. The principle that is relevant for pronouns, Principle B, has provided a fertile ground for the study of linguistic development. Although it has long been known that children make certain kinds of errors that appear to contradict this principle, further experimental interrogative pronoun and theoretical investigation reveals that the child does know the grammatical principle, but implements the pragmatic knowledge incorrectly. In fact, discoveries concerning children's knowledge of Principle B are among the most well-known in the study of language acquisition because of the dissociation between syntactic interrogative pronoun and pragmatic knowledge (binding versus reference). In this book the authors deepen interrogative pronoun and extend the results of years of developmental investigation of Principle B by studying the interaction of Principle B with verb phrase ellipsis interrogative pronoun and properties of the interpretation of empty pronouns in ellipsis--properties of "strict" interrogative pronoun and "sloppy" interpretation. This is the first experimental study of these topics in the developmental literature. The striking results show that detailed predictions from the "pragmatic deficiency" theory seem to be correct. Many novel experimental results concern the question of how children interpret pronouns, including elided pronouns, interrogative pronoun and how they understand VP ellipsis. The authors present the necessary theoretical background on Principle B, review interrogative pronoun and critique previous accounts of childrens errors, interrogative pronoun and present a novel account of whychildren misinterpret pronouns. The book will thus be of interest not only to readers interested in the development of the binding theory, but to those interested in the development of interpretation interrogative pronoun and reference by children.
