The World's Writing Systems by Peter T. Daniels,
Written language is the most neglected aspect of linguistic study, as the majority of research focuses on historical history of chinese writing and theoretical aspects of spoken language. Even studies devoted to writing systems generally place little emphasis on the scripts themselves, limiting coverage to the external history of writing systems. The World's Writing Systems is the only available work to explore in depth how scripts are applied to individual languages. Beginning with the ancient Near East history of chinese writing and the earliest known scripts, this unique reference documents the history history of chinese writing and typology of writing to the present day, covering scores of scripts from around the world - both those currently in use history of chinese writing and those now defunct. In more than eighty articles, it explains history of chinese writing and documents in accessible terms how writing systems work - how Egyptian hieroglyphs, Chinese characters, history of chinese writing and European alphabets convey meaning in graphic form. Sections devoted to the scripts of the ancient Near East, East Asia, Europe, South Asia, Southeast Asia, history of chinese writing and the Middle East are introduced with discussion of the social history of chinese writing and cultural contexts in which each group of writing systems was developed. Articles on individual scripts within these sections provide a wealth of background information, along with helpful visuals for each writing system: the historical origin of the writing system is detailed, its structure is delineated with tables showing the forms of the written symbols, history of chinese writing and its relationship to the phonology of the corresponding spoken language is thoroughly explored. Every major writing system is presented in a passage of text, accompanied by a romanized version, a phonetic transcription, history of chinese writing and an English translation. A bibliographyconcludes each entry.

Oh, China!: Elementary Reader of Modern Chinese for Advanced Beginners by Chih-P'Ing Chou,
"Oh, China! is a textbook for the growing number of "advanced beginners" who are studying Mandarin Chinese. These are students who, usually because of their Chinese family backgrounds, can speak history of chinese writing and understand elementary Mandarin, but cannot read or write well enough for an intermediate course. Most first-year texts serve advanced beginners poorly by focusing on elementary vocabulary history of chinese writing and conversation that the students already know. In contrast, this book offers help with what they most need: reading history of chinese writing and writing, grammar, history of chinese writing and achievement of standard pronunciation. The content of the lessons has also been chosen to appeal specifically to advanced beginners. There are three clusters of topics: the home history of chinese writing and social life of young Chinese- Americans, the notions of "overseas Chinese" history of chinese writing and their ties to China, history of chinese writing and important figures in modern Chinese history. Each lesson is given in both traditional history of chinese writing and simplified characters, and, for the first fifteen lessons, in "hanyu pinyin as well. The lessons are accompanied by vocabulary lists, grammar notes, usage exercises, history of chinese writing and character stroke-order charts. The book begins with a detailed chapter on "foundation work" in Mandarin pronunciation, complete with exercises. It concludes with a complete Chinese-to-English vocabulary index. "Oh, China! is designed for one year's study at the college level history of chinese writing and will prepare students to enter third-year courses. The latest in a series of Chinese language texts published by Princeton University Press, it will meet an important history of chinese writing and growing need in the teaching history of chinese writing and study of Mandarin. Audio history of chinese writing and video materials are available for use with this text.
